Spiritual philosophies

As we begin to question our spiritual philosophies we start to ask ourselves what we really believe. For those whose religious beliefs were learned in childhood, beliefs have become so deeply ingrained they may no longer be conscious, just recited creeds of a common belief.

For those beginning this process, some philosophies suggest that carrying out specific actions may help you better understand your beliefs. Some of these things can be done where you are, and others require going to a spiritual center. Wherever you are, act, pray or meditate and see how your spirit responds:
- go to a place where people have worshiped for many generations
- follow a structure of services throughout a day
- enthusiastically help others and turn the focus away from yourself
- speak only when necessary, don’t chatter to fill the quiet then notice your thoughts
- learn how to relax in silence
- let your natural body rhythms drive your day, not the clock
- don’t obsess over things you can’t change
- quietly examine your conscience, then confess your sins and ask for forgiveness as needed
- actively notice good things and express gratitude
- don’t immediately medicate pain away, listen to what your body is telling you, e.g. slow down, get some rest
- wait in eager anticipation, hope for great results, don’t try to force the pace
- be open to change and the growth it can bring
- rebalance your life with time for prayer/meditation, work and rest
- if you’ve asked for help, listen for words of guidance and then follow them
- read often spoken creeds and prayers line by line, and question what they mean
- ask for help, go to a trusted spiritual person and seek advice
- go into nature and experience solitude and wonder
- read
- question yourself

This is by no means an exhaustive list. Do those things you feel bring you into closer contact with your spiritual philosophy. Dare to challenge long held beliefs and consider new beliefs. Create practices that bring you comfort and a deepening sense of your spiritual self.

Finally, recognize that the paths you have been following this far brought you to this point. If you want your path to expand or change, you need to try new paths to get to a different destination.
